De ABCDE-methodiek is een snelle en effectieve manier om bedreigingen van vitale functies op het spoor te komen en te behandelen. Met het gebruik van de ABCDE-methodiek in de benadering en overdracht van de acute patiënt sluit de huisarts zich aan bij de ketenpartners in de acute zorg. De voor huisartsen specifieke versie van de ABCDE-methodiek is geschikt voor het beoordelen van patiënten die in de hoogste urgentiecategorieën vallen, maar is ook bruikbaar voor het beoordelen van patiënten uit een lagere urgentiecategorie. De methodiek is relatief eenvoudig aan te leren, hoewel het noodzakelijk is om een training te volgen en de verworven vaardigheden te onderhouden, net als het geval is bij de reanimatietechniek.

The ABCDE method is a quick and effective manner to identify and treat life-threatening dysfunctions of vital functions. Use of the ABCDE method in the management and referral of acutely ill patients is consistent with approaches used by emergency services. The general practice version of the ABCDE is useful for evaluating not only the most urgent cases but also the less urgent cases. The method is relatively easy to learn, although it is necessary to follow a training course and to maintain the skills leaned, as is also true for resuscitation techniques.
