- Telehealth innovation in Brazil
As reported by Stein and Ferri,1 Brazil has developed many efforts to enhance the effectiveness of primary health care (PHC). One such project is TelessaúdeRS-UFRGS (https://www.ufrgs.br/telessauders/), which is linked to the Postgraduate Epidemiology Program at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul.
Since 2007, TelessaúdeRS-UFRGS has combined academic research with teleconsultation, telediagnosis, and teleducation delivered directly to health professionals within the public Unified Health System (SUS). More than 100 000 consultancies have been provided to PHC physicians and nurses through a toll-free hotline set up to support clinical decision making and clarify doubts. A highlight of TelessaúdeRS-UFRGS is the ability to offer large-scale, standardised support across the entire SUS with recommendations based on evidence from the literature and data from specific trials – TelessaúdeRS-UFRGS is currently involved in nine clinical trials to investigate matters of interest to the SUS. Free smartphone apps and e-learning programs have been developed, and on-demand campaigns addressing critical issues (such Aedes aegypti borne diseases) have been designed.
